Before just taking someone’s word as fact, because they say ‘owned rats’ as their ‘source’ try looking up the information for yourself and double check so called ‘facts’ of what other people say. There are plenty of people out there who have owned or currently own rats, but it doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about. Research.

A forum is an excellent place to ask your questions, as there are members that have raised rats for many years and have dedicated their lives to bettering the species, and you can ask much more specific questions related to your situation or to your rats.
One of the benefits of a forum is that when other users answer, their information can be challenged, and you are more likely to get the best answer specific to your needs.

Are Rats Worth It?
You might have read through all of this information and thought to yourself, “Wow.. for a $5 animal, I never thought there would be so much involved in keeping rats as pets. Is it worth it?”
In my opinion, absolutely. If you have the time and the money for vet costs that may arise, I say go for it. They are incredibly intelligent and rewarding pets (as I’m sure other rat owners can attest to) and feel immensely grateful for my opportunity to share my life with them.
